“Recognizing and honoring the lifetime accomplishments of former Congressman Charles Vanik.” Cites his work in the 1930s to resettle Jews from Nazi Europe and authorship of a 1974 amendment to the Trade Act with Sen. Henry Jackson to condition U.S.-Soviet trade with the latter’s allowance for Jewish refugees to freely migrate. Praises former Rep. Vanik for “numerous contributions to human rights and democracy.”
Note: Vanik’s amendment to the Trade Act facilitated an influx of mostly Jewish refugees into Israel and its settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories from 1974 until the early 1990s.
