“Recognizing Senator Henry Jackson, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment, and reaffirming the commitment of the Senate to combat human rights violations worldwide.” Cites statistics that as a result of the amendment over 1m Jews were able to emigrate from the Soviet Union; that since 1975 over 1m Soviet Jews immigrated to Israel; former Israeli cabinet member and Russian dissident Natan Sharansky’s comment that the amendment was “a historical and practical weapon” for Zionists; and finally, Ehud Olmert’s comment in 1995 as mayor of Jerusalem that Jackson “forced his will on the U.S. leadership and across the world.”
